England’s Next Generation Of Strikers Must Take Their Chance This Premier League Season

The English transfer window has now closed, and while all the focus has been on how much has been spent, the lack of spending on strikers by some of the larger clubs could give the next generation of English strikers a chance to break into the first team.

Harry Kane and Marcus Rashford have two of England’s striker slots on lock-down, but with Jamie Vardy retiring from international soccer and Danny Welbeck being Danny Welbeck, the other one or two central striker slots have been up for grabs for a while. Callum Wilson may make it his own, should he continue his good form at Bournemouth, but there are also a few young England players who have a chance of breaking into sides in the top six of the Premier League this season.

In Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah, Liverpool have two of the best forwards out there. But beneath the surface, their forward line is a bit on the thin side. They relied on Daniel Sturridge in the league on occasions last season, and he’s been released. Danny Ings has also been sold although the deal was wrapped up last year, as was Dominic Solanke last winter, and Jurgen Klopp has opted to have a quiet transfer window this season. While Liverpool’s Divock Origi will be the main beneficiary of that lack of spending, the absence of other options could give Rhian Brewster the chance to finally show what he can do in front of a packed Anfield crowd.

Brewster had a strong preseason and Klopp rates him highly, saying “I love the boy, he is fantastic. Why should I play it down.” Brewster’s golden boot performance helped England win the Under- World Cup back in , but while his then-teammates Jadon Sancho, Phil Foden and Callum Hudson-Odoi are fast becoming household names, Brewster missed over a year with injuries after that World Cup triumph. Perhaps this season, he can break into the Liverpool side and reach the level of some of his U- teammates, especially as Liverpool have sold many of their other back-up strikers.

But it is telling that while Brewster played a lot in Liverpool’s early pre-season games he has appeared less and less as the new season has got nearer, and he didn’t even make the bench for the Community Shield. He may not quite be there yet, but this season could be his best chance of a breakthrough as one or two injuries would give him a clear path to the Liverpool first team.

Down the M in Manchester, Liverpool’s arch rivals also weakened their forward line this summer. Manchester United’s sale of Romelu Lukaku gives youngster Mason Greenwood a huge opportunity to break into United’s first team. Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has said that Greenwood even had a chance of starting against Chelsea on the opening day of the season, and that “he can play anywhere along the frontline” so he can fit in wherever United need him.

Manchester United may get a lot of stick for their transfer policies, but they are one of the best sides in the country for bringing through young talent. According to traininggroundgurum, they gave more minutes to players who had graduated from their academy than any other Premier League side last season although admittedly one of those players, Paul Pogba, had a $ million detour via Turin. Manchester United already have one young English forward in the year-old Marcus Rashford, but the way Manchester United’s backroom staff are raving about Greenwood, this may be his breakthrough year.

Chelsea’s transfer spending was decided for them by their transfer ban, but they did bring in a lot of new recruits by recalling all the young players they had out on loan. Frank Lampard has been keen to play his youngsters in pre-season, and Tammy Abraham has started four of Chelsea’s six preseason matches.

Abraham is a bit older than Brewster and Greenwood, in fact he is a few days older than Marcus Rashford, and he has also played for his country already. But he has yet to establish himself as a top Premier League striker. Abraham scored five Premier League goals for Swansea two years ago before coming close to being the Championship’s top scorer last season with Aston Villa. But there’s a big jump up from scoring for fun in the Championship and if Tammy Abraham can’t make that jump he won’t stay at Stamford Bridge for long.

Liverpool, Manchester United and Chelsea are unlikely to go another summer without buying a striker so if the chance comes along, Brewster, Greenwood and Abraham must take it, because like a striker in a goal drought, chances at the top are not easy to come by.

A Review Of Manchester United, Man City, Tottenham Hotspur And More Changes

This weekend, England s Premier League will come flying back into action for another season. As is becoming custom with leagues across Europe and the world, every team in the Premier League will have a new set of kits for the upcoming season. This is an effort to show and review each of the new looks for all Premier League clubs for the upcoming season. For further changes across the league, click here.

Manchester City

While Puma s sphere of influence within the Premier League may have declined by two clubs, they still have Crystal Palace and Newcastle under their belt and they also pulled a huge coup by getting Manchester City to leave the NikeUmbro umbrella. Puma have been trying to stamp their mark on City s identity and I d say that putting purple trim on their home kit for the first time in club history is a way to do that. The second kit is an asymmetrical adventure of a kit that s inspired by the Madchester club scene of the s and the third kit looks like what would happen if a raspberry mango smoothie became a football kit.

Manchester United

The Red Devils kept things very simple with their home kit. In an effort to go with a design that is intended to be a tribute to the – team that won the European Treble, the three stripes of Adidas are red to match the rest of the shirt and the badge is styled in a similar manner to what was worn on the pitch during that famous season from years ago. The away kit consists of a shirt that appears to be a very light shade of brown with black shorts and black trim.

Newcastle United

Newcastle and Puma are allegedly celebrating the th anniversary of their last major trophy victory with their home kit for this season. I say allegedly because while this is a decent-looking kit, the only thing that this kit has in common with what they wore while winning the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup is that it s black-and-white. That s it. The Magpies will continue to have a dark look on the field, as they ve gone with a very deep shade of green from the shirt down to the socks for their secondary look. Finally, they ve gone with an all-orange look for their third kit.

Norwich City

If you like Manchester City s third kit, then you will also like what Norwich City will be wearing for home games this season. The Canaries will be returning from the Championship with that competition s trophy in hand and a home kit that starts out yellow, then fades into green once it gets below the sponsor logo and into the shorts. It s basically manufacturer Errea s take on the gradient look that Nike gave to Tottenham Hotspur last season. They will be wearing that strange design alongside a somewhat standard all-red clash kit with yellow trim.

Sheffield United

The Blades are back in the Premier League for the first time since their one-and-done appearance back in -. They re already reaping the benefits of just being back in the Premier League since they will have a new shirt sponsor in the form of Union Standard Group in what is being reported as a record-breaking deal by the club. As far as their primary kit goes, Sheffield United haven t really settled on a standard look during their time with Adidas but what they usually do is just go with some variation of a shirt with red-and-white stripes and black shorts. That s what we got with their home kit, while their away kit is a gray look with red trim.

The Saints have been lost in the wilderness from an aesthetic standpoint since moving to Under Armour ahead of the – season. This season is no different, as all three of their kits are a bit of a mess. The connecting thread between the three kits is a shoulder yoke and in the case of the home kit, it looks blocky and out of place.

Tottenham Hotspur

The good news is that Spurs have finally come to their senses and released a no-nonsense home kit. It s white with the only traces of navy being seen on the sleeve cuffs and the collar, while the rest of the navy is on the shorts. This is basically an ideal look for Spurs. They will be wearing all-navy as a clash kit, which will have a purple pattern near the top of the shirt that could be best described as an enigmatic design that doesn t look great on paper but looks good on the field.

While some clubs are known for sticking with a baseline design and just adding minor tweaks to it, the only thing that s for sure with Watford is that the colors will be yellow-black-and-red and the crest will be on the right-hand side of the shirt. Other than that, it s a mystery when it comes to what to expect. This season, they will be wearing an Adidas shirt that is half-black and half-yellow. They continue to zig when everyone expects them to zag. On the other hand, their away kit is a somewhat simple navy blue kit, so there s not much zigging or zagging going on there.

West Ham United

While Newcastle are trying to pass off their – home kit as a throwback of sorts, West Ham United and Umbro haven t really tried to connect their current kit with the past. Yet, if you squint hard enough then you could see a vague tribute to the kit that the team wore during their run to the European Cup Winners Cup Final in . Meanwhile, the all-white away kit is actually inspired by what they wore when they won the FA Cup. The all-blue third kit isn t a nod to anything in particular, which breaks the pattern in that regard.

Wolverhampton Wanderers

After surviving and thriving during their first season back in the Premier League, Wolves are going with a kit that looks very similar to what they wore last season — at least from a distance. There s a sublimated pattern on the new shirt and the three stripes of Adidas are on the sides instead of the shoulder. Wolves will also be wearing an all-black change kit, which is the exact opposite of the all-white look that they wore last season.

England striker Toni Duggan joins Atletico Madrid after leaving Barcelona

Toni Duggan has signed a two-year deal with Atletico Madrid after leaving Barcelona in July.

The England striker helped Barca reach the Women s Champions League final last term before making three appearances for the Lionesses in their run to the semi-finals of the World Cup.

Duggan will continue her club career in the Primera Division Femenina after champions Atletico saw off competition for her signature from other top sides.

This is an amazing opportunity to play for one of the greatest clubs in Europe, said the -year-old forward.

I had several different offers – from all around the world – but at this stage in my career, I wanted to join a side that is consistently challenging for honours and Atletico s record is incredible. I ve seen this team up close over the last couple of years and they are a real force.

When I visited the new training ground I was extremely impressed. In terms of a facility that caters specifically for a women s team, it is the best I have ever seen.

I have met both the captain and manager – this is the next level for me, in every sense. They have great players and I want to help them to retain the league and to go further in the Champions League.

I played at the Wanda Metropolitano last season in front of , fans, so I know how much these supporters enjoy women s football – I was blown away by the atmosphere and their support for the team. It will be a huge honour to play in front of them. There are plans to play games at the Wanda next season and I am very excited about that.

Duggan joined Barcelona from Manchester City in  and played  games for the club, scoring  goals and helping them finish second to Atletico in the league two years running.
